Just a reminder…. we will be closed Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday, December 24th, 25th, 26th for Christmas

If you shopped on Black Friday two years ago and ended up with an extra set of car keys, their owner would still appreciate their return.  P.S. she refuses to shop on Black Friday until they are returned.  And she won’t even be upset and she understands how these things happen.  So if you’re holding on to ’em because you just can’t throw ’em away, bring ’em on back.  No hard feelings.
Coming soon

Projects in Waiting! A new group meeting just to work on protects together. Any project you want. Bring friends, food, and be ready for fun! This group is to inspire one another, help each other with design ideas and to encourage creativity. All people and projects welcome!

What is a project in waiting? We used to call them UFOs, or PHDs. They are the quilt you started 7 years ago, your first wool applique project that you aren’t excited about anymore, those blocks you just don’t know what to do with. Any project you have started or are thinking of starting, but that you need some friendly advice or inspiration for.

If this group sounds like something you would like to be a part of, give us a call at the shop or shoot us an email. Tell us what you want, when would be a good time, and when we should start! We are waiting patiently to hear from you!

…How can we help you today….?

Row by Row continues through September 2nd, (we will be closed on Labor Day)

We’ve had a wonderful time seeing familiar and meeting new faces this past month.

There are 84 Quilt Shops in Michigan along with hundreds in other states & Canada.

All row patterns are free when you visit a participating shop. Stop into the shop for the list or check out the Row by Row official page for details. There is also a Facebookpage. Our row sample is made up as a runner or wall hanging. Kits are available in the shop for $15. Due to the great interest in our kit; we’ve had to substitute wool for the velvet.

Uh-oh! Looks like we may have made a tiny mistake. If you were here on the Row by Row and purchased our kit July 28th-31st, please check your kit to make sure that you have everything you need. July 2014

Notes from The Hen House

…How can we help you today….?

Row, Row…. Row by Row (sorry couldn’t resist), begins July 1st and continues through Labor Day. There are 84 Quilt Shops in Michigan along with hundreds in other states. All row patterns are free when you visit a participating shop. Stop into the shop for the list or check out the Row by Row official page for details. There is also a Facebook page.

Our row sample is made up as a runner or wall hanging. Kits will be available in the shop for $15.

Your travel dates for “The Journey Continues” Shop Hop with Everlasting Stitches in Holt are  August 1st and 2nd .  Each shop will have 3 blocks for you to collect. Shop Hop hours are 9;30-5:30. Tickets are available for $5.

The week of September 2nd thru 6th, we are planning a Patched Pieces quilt show. (Also the week of Frontier Days in Charlotte). These will not be “Quilt Show” quilts, but the vintage quilts, pieced tops and blocks that have been handed down through the years. If you have one you’d like to share & display contact the shop to let us know. We will also be accepting items for the Siren shelter during the week.

Some of you have noticed subtle display changes in the past few months; in the past 4 weeks a few more have taken place.  One big change has been, an original doorway between the Hen House and the other half of the building (previously The Ski Loft) has been reopened to give us a larger area to hold classes and provide additional space for the products we can offer you. The various groups that meet at the shop are enjoying the extra elbow room. Come sit, stitch and enjoy the space with us.

We have received the new Kim Diehl fabrics called “Vintage Farmhouse”.  Some of the fabrics will be used for the “Whatnots Club” that will start in September.  The quilt samples are currently in progress. Meeting times are September through January, held first Saturday mornings (September will be 2nd Saturday) and the following Monday evenings. Please contact the shop for details and to sign up.

A few new fabric options have been added for you in the way of Batiks, plus a line of fabric called Silvia’s Sonnets by P & B.  We are waiting for the next Jo Morton line to arrive and we will be getting in the line of American Made Brand fabric, all in wonderful solids sometime in July. The American Made Brand in Seattle, Washington, is all grown, spun, woven and dyed in the United States. We look forward to playing with the many color choices the line has to offer.
All the new fabrics are coordinating nicely with the reproduction fabrics and wool!

Saturday, July 12th & 26th, 10- . Area weavers with portable looms and a Spinning group will be meeting, come join or watch the groups as they play with Fiber

Thursday, July 17th from 5-8. Fabulous Fat Friendly Frolic.  You’ll need at least 2 contrasting Fat Quarters, a rotary cutter, ruler and sewing machine to startyour own 1 of a kind scrap quilt. We will be slicing, sewing and re-slicing to make them unique. Cost is $15.

Saturday, August 21st, 10:30 – 4:00. Fabulous Fat Friendly Frolic. All day adventure in slicing contrasting Fat Quarters to make your own one of a kind scrap quilt. Cost is $15.

Saturday, July 26th, 10-5 ~ Saturday Crankers will be in with their awesome machines. Come check out the fun.

The Hen House will be closed Friday, July 4th through Sunday, July 6th.

Hope your summer experiences are safe, enjoyable and fun!

A Note From Nancy

I wanted to thank all of you for supporting me and being my friends over the last 30+ years. I have sold the business to Carolyn Rosier, a dear friend and long time employee. I still plan on being in the shop for clubs and making samples. Carolyn is doing awesome things with the shop so please welcome her as the new owner and make a trip to The Hen House. (I am at the lake with five boys under 10. I should be at the shop!)
We wish you Happy Stitches & we Thank You for helping us carry on the tradition.

Notes from Nancy

Here I am at Spring Quilt Market with some of my favorite friends and
designers. It is always good to see them and be around such creative
people. Somewhere we had a picture with Jennifer Gaston from Primitive
Quilts and Other Projects but it was missing from my phone.

Nancy with Stacy West and the girls from Blackberry Primitives (Tonja and Cindi) at Market.

Quilt Market in Pittsburgh was full of
“modern” fabrics–in other words – wild designs and bright colors.  I
did order the next two full lines of Jo Morton fabric which are small
lines – great for summer. I think they are coming in July and August. I
bought over-dyed wool and velvet for kits for our design for the
Michigan Row by Row Shop Hop which is from July 1st through Labor Day in
all the shops in the states participating. This is new for the state of
Michigan. The pattern is free at all the shops and kits will be
available for purchase. We have turned our row by row into a table
topper.

From Market I do have a new Scrap Crazy 6″ ruler that has 5 pieces and
will make a variety of quilt blocks. I especially like the crazy quilt
block and I can see some wonderful stitches from the #8 and #5 over-dyed
Valdani Pearl Cotton that was ordered! The ruler is in stock and the
thread should be here soon.

There are new Red Button patterns from Market and Elise and Carolyn have them into kits already.

We have new patterns from Blueberry Back Roads and while at Market, I
set up a Fall Trunk Show with some of her new Fall patterns. This will
take place the week after Labor Day and her samples will be available
for viewing for two weeks and the patterns for sale. I am sure we will
also kit some of them in Hen House fabrics.

Debby will be starting a Sampler Quilt in her Stitched by Hand class. If
you have been wanting to do some hand stitching, this is your
opportunity to join the group. The girls have a great time, lots of fun,
and you will not find a more helpful and knowledgeable teacher. In
fact, I think I just might join the Sampler class.

Enjoy this wonderful weather and come check out all the new items and all the clubs we have to offer on our calender.

May your hearts be big and your stitches small.
Nancy

Notes from Nancy

Oh My, where have the last 12 days gone as this Newsletter certainly did
not get out the first of May! I actually was at Blackwater Falls State
Park having a wonderful time at the Primitive Quilts and Other Projects
Retreat. This Thursday I will be off to Pittsburgh for Quilt Market.
Then my travels are over except for day trips.

Elise was gone last week so when all the new books and fabrics arrived,
we had to wait for her to come back and start posting. It all is not
done but she has a lot of the new patterns, fabric, and books on the
website.

I am working on the third block for “The Journey Continues” Shop Hop,
which will be the first week-end in August. We will keep you posted.  I
want to thank all the participants of the April Road Trip. Marie
McDonald  was the luck winner of the $50.00 gift certificate.

We are participating in the Row by Row Experience for 2014 with many
other Michigan shops. Elise has a link at the bottom for you to check
out all the information.

Many new homespun fabrics came today so keep checking out the website. I
know quilters are also gardeners and you are at the markets buying your
seeds and flowers but take time to see us, learn what is new, and get a
little stitching done.

May your hearts be big and your stitches small.        Nancy

P.S. Just a note to mention that the Saturday Crankers are not meeting
on the 24th since it is Memorial Day weekend. We will meet on the 31st
instead!

March 2014

Notes from Nancy

I do hope Spring is right around the corner as I am ready for grass, sunshine, and at least 50 degree temperatures.

I have spent the last six days in Indiana to be with my dad as he prepares for his final journey.

As soon as I am back home, I will get my July sand pail mini quilt
project underway for the April Road Trip. There are twelve shops and
each shop is making a mini hanging and you will be able to purchase the
kits and change your little frame each month. Later, I will have
pictures of each project. (We all have to finish them first.) We will be
selling the punch cards for $5.00 and you can shop all the shops on the
card once for special discounts.

Our Primitive Place magazines have just arrived! The first shipment, it
seems, got lost with all of the bad weather the country has been having.

As you may know, March is national craft month! On March 15th we will be
celebrating National Quilt Day and everyone that comes in may choose a
free fat quarter!

The Band Boxes with Downton Abbey fabric are in the shop. We will be
selling them individually or as sets. They will make your sewing room
look spectacular! Plus, if you order a set during the month of March you
will receive free shipping!

Don’t forget to check out the newsletter for all our sew-in’s and special clubs. Please join us as we have a lot of fun.

Keep Stitching, Nancy

Notes from Nancy

Well, here we are–dumped on again with more snow! My bags are packed
for a trip to Indiana this afternoon but I probably won’t be able to
make it again. I thought third time would be charm…

Elise is back and I am so thankful. If I screwed up any orders that were
sent while she was gone, please let me know so corrections can be made.

I spent last week working on a small covered box made of Pentagons. It
was a lot of fun. We have two sizes in the shop if you want to try your
hand at this project.

Another new sample in the shop is Peony Wreath from Nine Patch Gathering using Lisa’s fast way of piecing nine patches. Elise’s mom had fun making this sample for us.

The Alphabet Sampler (from Maggie’s latest book) was so much fun to do and I consider that my New Years Quilt. We have the kits for the wool letters. You just need to find the old heavy feed sacks.

In cleaning out old patterns that have not sold, I came across a
wonderful pattern of Linda Brannock’s that I have wanted to do since
2004 when it was written! (where has the time gone) and it has pieced
hexi’s and circles with stars of which I will do in wool. I am going to
pick those fabrics today while it is snowing and blowing.

I was so excited to get the new quilt of wool and velvets with hexie’s
incorporated in the design. This is on loan from Blackberry Primitives
for  awhile so be sure and get to the shop and see it. Details for
making this will come at a later date.

We have received a lot of new fabrics and patterns–fabric is chosen for
the Labyrinth pattern and we will be making a sample of that also.

Please park on the street when you visit the shop as I am almost snowed
in at the alley entrance. In the meantime, keep sewing, stay warm, and
pray for clear roads!     Nancy
