Notes from Nancy

First I want to thank everyone who supported our Journey to the Past
weekend. Even though our ticket sales were down from last year, our
overall sales in the shop were great and my staff and I really
appreciate your support in this event. The winner of the fat quarter
pack goes to Mary Korgal and the gift certificate goes to Kati Bauer.

I cannot believe we are coming to the beginning of the end of our
summer. I do know there are still 3 months of good weather left and that
is a comfort. I will be visiting my Dad next week-end and then making a
trip to Eastern Ohio to antique with friends ending up at Sauder
Village for the Rug Hooking exhibit. Do not let the girls get lonely
while I am gone. I will give you a quick re-cap on our monthly events
for August.

Feel free to come and rug hook on Monday, the 12th at 10:00 even through
I will be in Ohio. Stitched by Hand will meet on  Tuesdays, the 13th
and 27th at 9:30. The Hexi-Holics will meet on the 22nd at 10:00.
The Wednesday Woolies will meet on Wednesday the 28th also at 10:00. We
also hook every Friday night. Check with Linda at B’s Floral to see if
she will be here to oversee the Friday night hooking while I am gone.

I am looking forward to being the speaker at the Jackson Quilt Guild on the 26th of this month.

Jo’s Block of the Month fabric was ordered last week. I am not sure if I
am going to do the block of the month as I am doing Paula Barnes
Hampton Ridge but not starting till January of 2014. I love the blocks
and think it does not look like the traditional block of the month.

Debby and Dave Kenney would like to express their thanks and gratitude
for the thoughts, prayers, and cards. Dave is recovering and back to
work part time.

Please check out all new items. You will find the numbers for ordering
any of the new items when you go to the website. Again thank you for
supporting the shop and keep stitching.

Calling all Hexie-Holics! We will be having the second meeting of
hexie-holics on August 22nd at 10:00 am. Bring your English Paper
Piecing Project and join in the fun!

Notes from Nancy

Another beautiful day outside. Hopefully the weather will stay as nice
as it has been this week. Dick will be leaving with 5 kids under 12 for
Rainbow Lake in the morning. I will have one wonderful evening before I
leave after work on Saturday. Monday and Tuesday we move Sarah
(granddaughter) to a new apartment and then back to the lake for the
rest of the week and hopefully some fun. The girls will be at the shop
to help you with your sewing needs. Please visit them so they won’t be
lonely. Elise will probably have her NEW hexi project done by then. Her
1/4″ hexi project is all done and framed here at the shop. If you cannot
make it in, be sure and view it on line.

Since the last newsletter we have lots of new books and the 29 bolts of
Jo’s Savannah. The fat quarters and the fat eighths are bundled and
ready and several of you have them already. The whole collection of Pin
Money came a couple of weeks ago and we can take care of you with the
quarter and eighth bundles also. Check out the pictures at the bottom of
the newsletter. I have been busy on the machine making Carol Hopkins
Blue and Grey Trail. The kit is $45.00 and includes the pattern.

Journey to the Past is coming up the 26th and 27th of July. The ticket
to special deals in 4 shops, Jennifer’s, Everlasting Stitches, Creative
Quilting, and The Hen House will be worth the $5.00 Journey ticket. Here
is the picture of my quilt. The finishing kit is $40.00 and the three
block packet is $10.00 at each shop. I also have the pictures of each of
the quilts from the shops.

The first part of August I will have some more hand crank sewing
machines for sale. I am excited about that and will talk more about them
in the August newsletter. Our July Saturday Crankers will be meeting on
Wednesday, July 17 at Rainbow Lake and having a potluck. Bring your
hand crank machine, project, food and join us. Call me for directions.

Keep Stitching

Notes from Market and more!

View this email in your browser

Notes from Nancy

I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day week-end and perhaps got some
stitching done. We had a wonderful day of hand cranking here in the shop
on Saturday. I do have a machine for sale if you are interested.

I had a fun week-end but got no stitching done! Six of my family went to
the Lake House on Saturday and after a couple of remarks from my
husband about sewing, I thought it best to open a book. While sitting in
the shade, I read all about the President’s wives. I have been hooked
on C-Span on Monday nights at 9:00 for the same subject and they go into
depth and tell all kinds of interesting tidbits on the Ladies.

Here it is almost June and I already have a full calendar. The first
thing is to finish this month by heading to Indiana for a short trip on
Friday to visit my Dad. He is doing well.

Spring Quilt Market was in Portland, Oregon a couple of weeks ago and of
coarse it rained every day. Sue from Sew Unique Threads and I flew and
roomed together. We had a great fun time. I have no idea who her
favorite designers are nor does she know mine! We would looks at each
others purchase of patterns and have never seen them before! I came back
with many stuffed animal and fruit patterns to be made from velvet or
wool from Blackberry Primitives. I have ordered some of the samples and
will get them on the website soon. I actually went out of my box and
bought two of Edita’s block of the month designs and came home and “Hen
House-ed” the borders for little mini quilts. Debby is putting the Fall
one together as I write this newsletter. Another favorite designer is
Stacy West. I came back with a good many of her new patterns as well.

I have ordered Paula Barnes new block of the month and I think they are
five or six inch blocks. I really like the fabrics as well as the blocks
but have not received my shop kit yet to start the quilt.

I have already received a new Christmas fabric line by Anni Downs who is
from Australia. We will work on that quilt one of these hot days when
we want to cool off. (That certainly has not happened yet.)

The book My Name is Lidya came but at Market I found out it had
many mistakes so they are re-printing the whole book and I should have
new copies in a few weeks. Another new book from Market  which will be
coming soon is from Polly Minick and Lori Simpson. This book is being
published by Quilt Mania and what an awesome job they have done! The
girls were passing out free patterns for scarves to be made from
homespun fabrics. We have one from my homespuns and Elise added an
adorable flower pin to the scarf which she made from wool. Check out the
picture and if you would like a class on this let us know.

Jo’s new line of fabric should be here by the middle of June and is
called Savannah.  Pam Buda’s “Pin Money” should be coming any day. We
actually spent last Wednesday re-vamping the fabrics and now can you
believe we have room for them!

There are also new patterns from Carol Hopkins and she even designed one
of the patterns for a dear friend of mine. The title is  Cyrus Young
and he was a relative of Sheila’s and an abolitionist during the Civil
War.

The June Road Trip mini-quilt is done and we are thrilled with the
outcome after many trials at making a bunting. In the long run, it was
very easy! (I will get busy on the directions tomorrow!)

Below is the Journey to the Past Quilt which just got finished
yesterday. It is now on the list to be quilted and Linda will make it so
beautiful. Join us for the Journey Friday and Saturday, July 26th and
27th.

Thank you for your continued business and for reading this very long letter.

Keep Stitching

New Items, Articles, and Hexies! Oh My!

View this email in your browser

Notes from Nancy

I really feel that Spring is on the way. I spent over an hour ironing
some Spring shirts over the week-end. I put all my turtle-necks away but
still have my wool socks and cords. Saturday was my oldest
grand-daughter’s college graduation from Grand Valley. I don’t know
where the four years have gone. I do know I have spent lots of money on
books and keeping her in dining dollars. Doesn’t every Nana do that? At
least I don’t have to do the dining dollars for the Masters Degree as
the classes are all at night. When that is done, she will start her new
job and can send me dining dollars!

Lets talk shop! I just finished the directions for the May mini quilt
for the Road Trip. You can see the pretty flower basket in wools and one
velvet flower! Just clothespin the new one and set aside the Sheep for
another time. Remember you can stop for discounts in May and June with
your punch card.

Ronda has been working hard on the blocks for the Journey to the Past in
July. We will get that finished and get a picture on the website. It is
a fun event with only 3 other shops and lots of great discounts. The
cost is the same as last year, $5.00 and takes place July 26, and 27.
You will be registering to win a variety of great door prizes!

Several new books and magazines have come in the last couple of weeks. Our favorite, Primitive Quilts and Other Projects for Summer, is here and we have each picked our favorite project for our “to do” list. The June/July issue of Mary Jane’s Farm
came a few days ago with lots of great articles. My favorite was on the
Pearl Button Museum in Muscatine, Iowa  (I think this might be a road
trip!) As I am finishing this newsletter, the Summer issue of A Simple Live has
arrived. Elise has sat down to check out the articles. She says they
are great! We are back in stock with JoAnn Mullaly’s books Wool Crazy, Crazy at Home, and Folk Branches. She is retiring so these will be her last books and they will make a nice addition to your collection of wool patterns.

Next month I will send you a picture of my Lake House on Rainbow. Until then keep stitching!

Nancy

We had a really lovely lady write a blog post about our shop! It is a great article and so fun to read. Thanks, Stephanie!

Madison Manor and More in….the April Newsletter from The Hen House!

Notes from Nancy

As I write this newsletter the sun is shining and it is close to 50
degrees. I hope I haven’t hexed the weather by putting my long coat in
the closet. I am still in wools however!  The April Road Trip starts
Monday and the instructions and photo just got copied and they look
beautiful. Carrie Ritter does such a great job at International Minute
Press in Lansing. We are excited about the project and in order to
purchase the kit and pattern, you must get the punch card for $5.00. You
know if you did this last year that it is good for 3 months in a row
and really special deals in the shops listed on the punch-card. I am
working on a basket of flowers for the May project that will hang on the
clothesline. Just take the sheep down and hang the basket of flowers
for May. This basket will hold flowers of wool, velvet, and a bud of
hexagons. In my mind it is beautiful!

I have been having fun making a few curtains for my house from the thin
gauzy fabric that came a few months ago. It only comes in white so I
dyed some with tan Rit dye in my washer and it turned our really nice
with a few blotches which was great. I have included a picture of the
one upstairs to whet your appetite. This fabric is 60″ wide and sells
for 6.99 per yard.

Jo Morton’s new line called Madison Manor came yesterday and there are
24 new beautiful colors for your next project. The girls are putting
together fat quarter bundles and fat eighth bundles.

Check out the new books and we will see you on the Road Trip. Have a great Happy Easter and keep stitching!

March 2013

Blue Variety, Road Trip, Quilt Show and More!

View it in your browser.

Notes from Nancy

I was so glad to see February end and March come into the picture!
Hopefully the ice we used to get in March was during February this year.
And–I just bought 50# of salt for the back end of the shop so that
alone should tell all of us that I won’t need to use it this month!

I am really excited to be a vendor for the Thornapple River Rippers
Quilt Guild on March 16th, and 17th. The hours are Saturday 9:00-5:00
and Sunday 9:00- 4:00. This takes place at the Barry Expo Center 1350 N.
Hwy M37 between Hastings and Middleville. I will be hanging lots of new
quilts and wall hangings. The Tavern House should be done by then as I
am ready to stitch the bottom border to the quilt. It is beautiful and
there are only four more opportunities to participate in this block of
the month.

The month of April starts the annual ROAD TRIP which includes 11 other
shops. The punch cards are still $5.00 and can be purchased anytime. You
will get great discounts in each of the 12 shops. My little quilt is
done and on display. May and June will have different mini quilts
hanging on the line. May is already done in my head! I have not had time
to price out the kit yet.

Don’t forget to join us the second Monday in March for open rug hooking.
The last Wednesday of March is Wednesday Woolies. We have lots of fun
at both of these events and there is no charge for participation. Just
bring your projects and enjoy the day with us.

The Saturday Crankers will not be meeting at The Hen House this month as
we will be meeting for a Mini Toga at Elaines II in Ovid. Everyone is
welcome to come and crank with us. I will give you a heads up for April
Saturday Crankers. We will meet the 3rd Saturday just for April only.
(My granddaughter is graduating from Grand Valley) the 4th Saturday and
of coarse I can’t miss the Saturday Crankers!

National Quilting Day is March 17th. So there is a 20% discount on
books, patterns, and fabric for you to use March 16th at the shop.

Check out all the new items below, join us with the Hexi Craze, and keep stitching.

February 2013

The February Newsletter is here from the Hen House

View it in your browser.

Notes From Nancy

As February fast approaches, I have a busy newsletter for you to read.
The Road Trip Tickets are ready for your purchase and like last year,
they are $5.00 each. You may visit the shops once each month in April,
May, and June for specials in fabric and supplies. Next week we plan to
design the small quilts. You are going to love my staff’s creative
ideas.

I promised you a picture of my Rhonda Manley designed hooked rug when I
got it finished and here it is. It is the length of my rope bed and
looks so nice beside it. It has only taken me about three years but well
worth the time. Now I am ready to start a couple of small rugs in my
favorite Fall colors. I should get lots done as I am leaving for the
week-end to rug hook with my Indiana Fiber Friends. Lets hope the snow
will hold off till we get down there. I see the weather is suppose to be
nice on Sunday for the trip back home.

We all fell in love with the homespun house quilt on the cover of the
new Spring Primitive magazine. Having a nice selection of homespuns and
brushed cottons, it didn’t take long to get the fabrics together and
wools picked for all the appliques. I just got the last sunflower
appliqued on the border before starting this newsletter. Elise has taken
a picture and the kits are almost ready. This quilt makes a very nice
lap throw. Cost of the kit will be $119.00 and includes the binding.

.

The pictures of these wonderful small quilts are the first three of
Prairie Women Sewing Circle number 4. Debby’s classes start on Saturday
the 2nd and on Monday the 4th in the evening.  If interested, please
call the shop to register. You do not have to make them in these colors.
You will be able to pick your own colors. Feel free to use Jo’s fabric
if you so desire.

Please join us for the following fun events: Open Sewing is Wednesday
the 6th, Open Rug Hooking is Monday the 11th, Hand Piecing is Tuesday
the 12th and Debby is starting the Needle Case. You don’t have to be a
member of Stitched by Hand to get in on the Needle Case. Just give us a
call. The Saturday Crankers will meet the 23rd and the Wednesday Woolies
the 27th.

I will be a vendor at the Thornapple River Rippers Quilt Guild March
16, and 17th. This will take place at the Barry Expo Center. More on
this in the March Newsletter. Until then, keep stitching……  Nancy

Happy New Year! From The Hen House!

Notes from Nancy

Happy New Year to all of you and thank you for the most awesome 2012 despite the small bump in the road. I spent a wonderful time with Indiana and Michigan friends bringing in the New Year and getting my hooked rug finished (almost).  Just a little tweaking at Friday night rug hooking and I will be ready to photo it and get it on the floor in my bedroom. (I’ve only been at this for two years!)

The pictures of these wonderful small quilts are the first three of Prairie Women Sewing Circle number 4. Debby was set to start this in January but everyone wants to finish up projects first, so we will give you a month and start in the first Saturday or Monday evening in February.  If interested, please get your name on the list. You do not have to make them in these colors. You will be able to pick your own colors. Feel free to use Jo’s fabric if you so desire.

Ronda will be teaching the Barbados Bag on Saturday, the 9th of February from 10:00-4:00. Class fee is 20.00 plus your pattern and supplies. Please sign up early if you are interested in this class and make a deposit.

Don’t forget our morning rug hooking on the 7th. and our every Friday night hooking at 5:30. There are no charges for these events unless you are a beginner and need instruction.

Stitched by Hand meets the second and fourth Tuesday mornings at 9:30 and goes till noon. Soon they will be starting a wonderful needle case. If you are not a part of this club, you can join for $15 (if you are not already a member) and $10 (if you are a member). To continue to attend the needle case class it is $3 for non-members for each additional week you come and $2 for members. You must also purchase the book and supplies from the shop.

The Saturday Crankers will meet the 26th for our monthly fun day of sewing on hand crank sewing machines. Bring a project to work on or let us pick one for you. One of us usually brings soup in the winter or hot sandwiches and everyone pitches in with a goodie. I will do this month and have sloppy jo’s.

The Wednesday Woolies is usually the last Wednesday of the month but I will be visiting my Dad at that time, so I would like to move it up a week to the 23th. If you can make it then, we would love to stitch with you. Just bring a wool project to work on. I will be madly stitching away on Tavern House which should start in February. The girls are waiting on the cotton velvet.

Until next month, Keep Stitching, Nancy

The
countdown is on for all those Christmas presents to be finished–or
started!  There were certain ones that I wanted to get done by the end
of November and I came running down the steps from my sewing room last
night with them all finished. You just don’t want to see my sewing room.
The kit arrived this week for Tavern House. I am so anxious to start
it. Now I can get started on Maggie’s new block of the month that we
gave you a preview of last month. The cotton over-dyed velvet is so
beautiful for the bird’s wings. Tonight after rug hooking, I will go
home and start tracing onto freezer paper–yeah! This wool wall hanging
will cost 45.00 per month for eight months. It is a 50″ x 52″ bed cover.

Saturday, December 8th from 10:00-3:00 will be a snowman ornament make
and take. The cost will be $5.00 and we will furnish all the wools and
embellishments. Come join in the fun. No pre-registration is necessary.

The Legacy quilt is all kitted and ready the first of January to start
the block of the month. The cost is $25.00 per month which includes the
finishing kit price. This is a 9 month block of the month and you will
have a beautiful quilt that does not look like your standard block
looking blocks of the month. If you prefer it as a whole kit, we can do
that for you. We will also have the first Wednesday of the month
starting in February, if you would like to come in for help and work on
the blocks. In January you will get the finishing kit as there are lots
of small blocks you can work on during the next 8 months. A block-loc
ruler is really helpful for this quilt. (I didn’t have them when I made
the quilt).

Brian Haggard’s Crazy Quilt books are here and are so inspiring. Sue
Spargo’s Creative Stitching came in last week and 18 copies flew out the
door. More will arrive right before Christmas. Get your name on the
list! It is a to die for gorgeous book with wonderful directions and
pictures.
I have 5 of the blocks done for Linda’s Baskets. They are turning out to
be fun and very easy applique. Four more to do and I can put it
together. I won’t ask Linda to quilt it till after Christmas.

New real leather purse straps came this week. They are 24″ and available
in brown or black for $35.00. Check out the website as Elise has it all
on even before I hardly look it it. She is indispensable!

There are still clubs and events going on in December at the shop so
check out the classes!  Have fun with your projects, remember I am
always closed December 25 and 26.  Have a great holiday season. Nancy

Notes from Nancy

I do believe Winter is here. The leaves are off the trees, the wind is blowing, and we are waiting for the pilot to be lit on the furnace in the sewing and sale area. By late afternoon we should be warm and toasty. And–what looks toasty to me is Maggie’s new BLOCK OF THE MONTH. The size is 48″ x 50″. It is named “Tavern House” and uses not only overdyed wool but some hand-dyed cotton velvets. I can’t wait for my kit so I can get started.

Another quilt that will be a block of the month is “The Legacy Quilt” Here is a picture of the top and I hope to get the backing ready for Linda to quilt. We will get a finished picture on the website soon as it is quilted. I am not sure of the cost yet but I do know you will be getting the finishing kit first. It was fun to do and the blocks are 7″ finished. The new bloc-loc ruler is a must have for this quilt. I will be setting aside one day a week for those wishing to come in for help with the Legacy Quilt. Bring your sewing machine and stitch some blocks – there will be no charge.

Jo’s new line of Toasted has been in the shop about a week. Fat Quarter bundles and Fat Eighth bundles are ready for your purchase. That way you will have a great selection of backgrounds.

Black Friday (11/23)!

I will get myself out of bed and open the shop at 8:00 A.M. for awesome sales!
8:00 – 10:00 get 40% off cotton fabrics in minimum 1 yard  cuts that are not already on sale, 40% off of books and patterns!
