Notes from Nancy

Happy New Year to all of you and thank you for the most awesome 2012 despite the small bump in the road. I spent a wonderful time with Indiana and Michigan friends bringing in the New Year and getting my hooked rug finished (almost).  Just a little tweaking at Friday night rug hooking and I will be ready to photo it and get it on the floor in my bedroom. (I’ve only been at this for two years!)

The pictures of these wonderful small quilts are the first three of Prairie Women Sewing Circle number 4. Debby was set to start this in January but everyone wants to finish up projects first, so we will give you a month and start in the first Saturday or Monday evening in February.  If interested, please get your name on the list. You do not have to make them in these colors. You will be able to pick your own colors. Feel free to use Jo’s fabric if you so desire.

Ronda will be teaching the Barbados Bag on Saturday, the 9th of February from 10:00-4:00. Class fee is 20.00 plus your pattern and supplies. Please sign up early if you are interested in this class and make a deposit.

Don’t forget our morning rug hooking on the 7th. and our every Friday night hooking at 5:30. There are no charges for these events unless you are a beginner and need instruction.

Stitched by Hand meets the second and fourth Tuesday mornings at 9:30 and goes till noon. Soon they will be starting a wonderful needle case. If you are not a part of this club, you can join for $15 (if you are not already a member) and $10 (if you are a member). To continue to attend the needle case class it is $3 for non-members for each additional week you come and $2 for members. You must also purchase the book and supplies from the shop.

The Saturday Crankers will meet the 26th for our monthly fun day of sewing on hand crank sewing machines. Bring a project to work on or let us pick one for you. One of us usually brings soup in the winter or hot sandwiches and everyone pitches in with a goodie. I will do this month and have sloppy jo’s.

The Wednesday Woolies is usually the last Wednesday of the month but I will be visiting my Dad at that time, so I would like to move it up a week to the 23th. If you can make it then, we would love to stitch with you. Just bring a wool project to work on. I will be madly stitching away on Tavern House which should start in February. The girls are waiting on the cotton velvet.

Until next month, Keep Stitching, Nancy

Tavern House

Maggie Bonanomi’s new wool Block of The Month is expected to start in February. Nancy is working on the blocks and we are all getting really excited. In addition to the wool, Maggie has incorporated some gorgeous hand dyed cotton velvets. Costs: $45 per month and runs for 8 months.

Legacy Sampler

This great Block of the Month is starting this month! In addition to the kits, we are offering open sewing days on the first Wednesday of each month. Costs: $25 a month which includes the finishing kit. This BOM runs for 9 months.

The
countdown is on for all those Christmas presents to be finished–or
started!  There were certain ones that I wanted to get done by the end
of November and I came running down the steps from my sewing room last
night with them all finished. You just don’t want to see my sewing room.
The kit arrived this week for Tavern House. I am so anxious to start
it. Now I can get started on Maggie’s new block of the month that we
gave you a preview of last month. The cotton over-dyed velvet is so
beautiful for the bird’s wings. Tonight after rug hooking, I will go
home and start tracing onto freezer paper–yeah! This wool wall hanging
will cost 45.00 per month for eight months. It is a 50″ x 52″ bed cover.

Saturday, December 8th from 10:00-3:00 will be a snowman ornament make
and take. The cost will be $5.00 and we will furnish all the wools and
embellishments. Come join in the fun. No pre-registration is necessary.

The Legacy quilt is all kitted and ready the first of January to start
the block of the month. The cost is $25.00 per month which includes the
finishing kit price. This is a 9 month block of the month and you will
have a beautiful quilt that does not look like your standard block
looking blocks of the month. If you prefer it as a whole kit, we can do
that for you. We will also have the first Wednesday of the month
starting in February, if you would like to come in for help and work on
the blocks. In January you will get the finishing kit as there are lots
of small blocks you can work on during the next 8 months. A block-loc
ruler is really helpful for this quilt. (I didn’t have them when I made
the quilt).

Brian Haggard’s Crazy Quilt books are here and are so inspiring. Sue
Spargo’s Creative Stitching came in last week and 18 copies flew out the
door. More will arrive right before Christmas. Get your name on the
list! It is a to die for gorgeous book with wonderful directions and
pictures.
I have 5 of the blocks done for Linda’s Baskets. They are turning out to
be fun and very easy applique. Four more to do and I can put it
together. I won’t ask Linda to quilt it till after Christmas.

New real leather purse straps came this week. They are 24″ and available
in brown or black for $35.00. Check out the website as Elise has it all
on even before I hardly look it it. She is indispensable!

There are still clubs and events going on in December at the shop so
check out the classes!  Have fun with your projects, remember I am
always closed December 25 and 26.  Have a great holiday season. Nancy

Notes from Nancy

I do believe Winter is here. The leaves are off the trees, the wind is blowing, and we are waiting for the pilot to be lit on the furnace in the sewing and sale area. By late afternoon we should be warm and toasty. And–what looks toasty to me is Maggie’s new BLOCK OF THE MONTH. The size is 48″ x 50″. It is named “Tavern House” and uses not only overdyed wool but some hand-dyed cotton velvets. I can’t wait for my kit so I can get started.

Another quilt that will be a block of the month is “The Legacy Quilt” Here is a picture of the top and I hope to get the backing ready for Linda to quilt. We will get a finished picture on the website soon as it is quilted. I am not sure of the cost yet but I do know you will be getting the finishing kit first. It was fun to do and the blocks are 7″ finished. The new bloc-loc ruler is a must have for this quilt. I will be setting aside one day a week for those wishing to come in for help with the Legacy Quilt. Bring your sewing machine and stitch some blocks – there will be no charge.

Jo’s new line of Toasted has been in the shop about a week. Fat Quarter bundles and Fat Eighth bundles are ready for your purchase. That way you will have a great selection of backgrounds.

Notes from Nancy

Don’t you just love the Fall weather we are having? I love the month of October. On my way home from church today, the trees were starting to turn and everything was starting to look so beautiful!  And——so is my Legacy Quilt that I have been working very hard to get finished by the end of October and start a block of the month in January. I am hoping to give you the big reveal in November!

Prairie Women Sewing Circle #4 is in the shop and Debby likes the quilts and has agreed to teach the class. She even has the fabrics picked out for the first quilt. No starting date has been scheduled yet.

I am excited to have a trunk show in the shop from Jan Crane of Crane’s Designs. These are wonderful needle punch designs and if you have not seen needle punch, it looks like miniature hooked rugs. The trunk show will be in the shop until the 15th of October. I will be taking it to Bridgeman, Mi. for the Hook In October 13th. You can check out the Classes for dates on a needle punch class.

Don’t forget that we rug hook on the 2nd Monday of the month. I get to the shop at 9:30 a.m. Bring your lunch or we can order from one of the great restaurants in town. We work with wool appliqué the last Wednesday of the month and use the same format as far as time etc. so join us for Wednesday Woolies.

Keep Stitching, Nancy

P.S. My dad is doing very well and is living on “Tulip Tree Lane” at the “Hotel”.  Thanks to all of you who ask about him. I hope to get down in another week for a visit.

September 2012

September Newsletter from the Hen House.
As we wind down the summer with picnics and the bridge walk over Labor Day weekend, we look forward to pumpkins, apples, and all the colors of Fall. I am looking at a wool pattern of a pumpkin and owl that I am going to make and kit soon as this newsletter is written.
The Cal-Co Quilt Show in Marshall is the  8th and 9th of September and I am looking forward to being a vendor. I hope you saved a little money back after the AQS show in Grand Rapids.

I have a trunk show of Maggie’s Wool Bed Runner for display for a couple of weeks. Be sure and stop in to check it out.

Leesburg fabric by Jo Morton is flying out the door and we continue to make more fat quarter and fat eighth bundles. The Red Button Mini Quilt kits are doing very well. Just got in more patterns. Looking forward to a large order of Marcus Fabrics that was placed yesterday.  I will be pulling a variety of fabrics for the new Block of the Month “Legacy Sampler”. This pattern is only available as a BOM to shops who did the “Vendor Hop” at Spring Market. We will start the sample in September so you can get an idea of fabrics being used in the quilt.

Debby has a few more months of Jo Morton’s Little Women Club and then she will be starting the 3rd session of Prairie Women’s Sewing Circle. If you want to learn techniques and only spend 2 hours each month at the shop, this is the Club for you. There will be more details on this later.

Here are a few pictures of the new patterns and magazines that have been arriving this past week.

Notes from Nancy

It seems like I just finished the July newsletter but we stitchers do know how time flies because we always have fun!

First before I get into all the new wools, books, and fabric, I want to
thank all of you for your prayers, cards, and concerns about my health.
My red blood count was very low so a colonoscopy was scheduled and two
days later surgery was done to remove a cancerous tumor. Last Thursday I
got the best news ever, stage one, and they got everything. So now I
just have to build up the red blood cells and get my strength back. I am
coming back for a few hours a few days a week. I have missed all my
wonderful customers and the new customers who have discovered us through
the Sampler magazine

We have a great selection of new things in

fantastic collection of Christmas fabrics! There are already over 15

July 2012

NOTES FROM NANCY

Happy 4th of July to all of you and I hope you have had a great summer with lots of fun things to do and sites to see.  I know  many of you have visited my shop because of the write up in the Quilt Sampler magazine. I am truly blessed to have such wonderful customers and friends who like to keep me in business.

The Quilters Road Trip is winding down and it has been extreamly successful. Someone today mentioned I should continue the small quilt table topper to be seasonal for the following months. I am seriously giving that some thought. Our next big adventure is the JOURNEY TO THE PAST. The dates are July 20 and 21st.  The hours are Friday from 9:00-7:00 and Saturday from 9:00 5:00.  This is an easy day trip to visit 4 great shops and get great discounts. Everyone who did it last year just loved it. The other shops are Everlasting Stitches, Jennifer’s Quilt Shop, and Quality Quilting. The ticket will cost only 5.00 and your 3 block packet from each shop willl cost you 10.00.  You will also get a free gift at the first shop you visit. I have not yet figured out the cost of the finishing kit. That will need to be done soon. Below is my verson of the Journey to the Past Spool Quilt.

We have been really busy making kits of lots of new patterns from Market. Be sure and check out the website as Elise (my very favorite intern and friend) has been so busy getting lots of new items on for your viewing. You can even order from the website and I am amazed how many orders come in during the week.

Another new magazine I now carry beside Mary Jo’s Farm (which is wonderful) is A Primitive Place which comes out quarterly. You will see pictures of both below along with pictures of a few patterns and kits.  I just had to put a picture of Ronda’s antique machine. You can view more pictures in the Gallery on the website.

NOTES FROM NANCY

Quilt Market was in Kansas City this year and it was an awesome experience when the Top Ten Quilt Shops received their recognition from Jennifer Keltner, the editor of American Patchwork and Quilting magazine. Each of us was introduced and then our quilt was paraded around the Better Homes and Gardens booth. We each received a framed plaque that we are a top ten shop and another that is a photograph of the staff. These are on display in the shop.

Jennifer and me 5-18-2012 12-00-42 PM.JPG

I found a lot of really nice patterns and came home with a suitcase full of which I finally got photos in a folder and will try to get them on the website really soon. There are about 50+ ones to enter. I have some great pictures of Stacy West’s Buttermilk Basin booth to post on the Gallery section of the website.

I hope all of you had a restful and nice Memorial Day week-end. I enjoyed having a 2 day mini vacation. It was fun to sit on the porch swing with my Dad who is visiting again for 3 weeks and do hand stitching.

Besides washing 10 windows yesterday, I finished a mini quilt I have been working on this week-end as a sample for the shop from one of the many patterns I brought back from Quilt Market. Debby and Linda are also working on a mini quilt and I have re-ordered more patterns because these are so darn cute.

index

The blocks were done on one of my hand crank machines during the Saturday Crankers this past Saturday. I continued on a hand crank at home to put the blocks together. However, when it came to putting the rows together I had to suffer the heat on third floor and use my Pfaff electric! I still have to pick a backing and do some hand or machine quilting. Rather than selling these patterns alone, I am making all of them into kits. The buttons make such cute flowers.

The June class schedule is posted and I am pleased to say Elise Banks will be back to do another internship the 2nd week of June and be here for the month I hope. Then we will really get lots of products on the website. Until next time, keep stitching and remember I really appreciate all of your business in the shop and the orders I am getting off the website–there will be a lot more for you to choose from, I promise.

May 2012

Notes from Nancy

Well, lots of work has been going on for the new website which is almost finished. Some buttons need to be added to be able to purchase on the website.
Phone calls have been coming in for kits etc. that are in the Sampler Magazine. I have even ordered MORE MAGAZINES.  This is the beginning of a great ride!  Hope I can keep up on the energy I need for this!  Kits and magazines are selling well.

Now I have MORE NEWS– This is an invitation for all of you who can to come to the Eaton County Courthouse-Museum (downtown courthouse) on Friday evening, May 11, from 5:00-7:00 for viewing antique quilts and a selection of my retired quilts–and some of which I use! There is a reception and goodies and you can get your magazine and kit if you have not already done so.
Two new lines have come and not all of them are on the website yet. Seventeen bolts of Seasonal Little Gatherings at 10.99 yd. came while I was at Workt By Hand in Ohio. (I think 3 of them are on the website but I will get there! Then Monday Jo’s new line of Sunday Best (shirtings) came and they are really nice. The girls have been busy cutting fat quarters and fat quarter bundles and fat eighth bundles and they are gone and now we have to start over again!
Jo called me today and she put the patterns in the mail she did for “just me” of some of her older Jo’s Little Women patterns that I have samples of as some are in the magazine.  They should be here by the middle of next week.
Now, I am ready to create a May Class Schedule/Club and Fun Stuff events.   Thanks for all your support–I couldn’t be where I am today without all of you who love the shop.        Nancy
